The main goal of the Veteran’s Healthcare SIG is to explore, better understand, and communicate the issues and unique needs that factor into the healthcare of veterans to our peers in the IU School of Medicine. To specifically accomplish this goal, we will organize informational sessions in which panels of veterans discuss their positive and negative experiences in the healthcare field, as well as panels in which doctors who primarily serve veterans can educate the student body on their experiences and on practices in which to better care for those who have served our country. We will also volunteer in clinics that focus on providing care for patients (i.e. the VA), as well as work with local organizations whose main purposes are to improve the lives of veterans in Indiana. Members will be expected to regularly participate in SIG meetings and events, as well as actively provide feedback and personal insight to improve the manner in which the organization can help to better serve veterans in our community. Overall, we hope to promote a better student appreciation for how the care of our nation’s veterans can at times be more intricate than the healthcare of the everyday patient.
