IMPRS Summer Program Application

All students (even those completing programs outside of IU) should fill out the IMPRS Summer Program Application by January 15. Click here to access the application.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • The applicant must be a current Phase 1 Year 1 IU School of Medicine student in good academic standing.
  • The applicant should demonstrate an interest in and aptitude for scientific investigation.
  • Students who receive funding directly from IMPRS must commit to the required full-time summer research program schedule for the entire duration of the program. Students receiving funding from IMPRS cannot be simultaneously obligated to other grants or awards requiring a commitment of time during the designated IMPRS Summer Program time.
  • The student holding a doctorate or master’s degree, or a combined professional and research doctorate normally are not eligible for the NIH short-term training positions.
  • The student must comply with all institutional policies related to conduct, academic honesty, professionalism and lawful behavior.
  • The student must attend the weekly seminars.
  • The student must agree to participate in the IMPRS Poster Presentation.
  • The student must agree to the maximum of three vacation days policy (not including holidays).

What to Consider Before Applying

  • Prior to applying, students are highly encouraged to brainstorm an area of research interest. Explore potential mentors.
  • Students should decide if they want to spend 10 or 12 weeks of summer research. Programs supported by the NIH grants will be 12 weeks.  Areas of research for the 12-week session are related to projects with the focus on heart and lungs, eye, bone and immunology.
  • Students are encouraged to apply to multiple programs; each track has specific requirements.

General Application Requirements for IU School of Medicine Programs

  • Personal information, including demographics, contact information and address.
  • MCAT scores
  • A professional letter of reference (LOR) demonstrating student strengths and interest
  • Personal statement
  • General Release of Information form
  • Preferred campus for the summer internship..
  • Mentor Preferences:
    • List of two-four preferred faculty mentors that the applicant may want to work with in the summer. Explore potential mentors.
    • IMPRS will attempt to match students with mentors in accordance with stated interests, this is based on faculty availability and may not be feasible in all situations.

General Application Requirements for External Programs

  • Personal information, including demographics, contact information and address.
  • A letter from IU School of Medicine confirming academic good standing.
  • Name of program; program location; program mentor.
  • Research idea, project idea, research interest/focus etc.

Timeline

November
IMPRS Summer Program application opens.

January
IMPRS Summer Program applications are due on January 15.

February
IMPRS Summer Program applications will be reviewed and selected.

March
IMPRS will notify selected students with their mentor matches. Note: the IMPRS Office will do the best to match the mentor you have requested and to the area of interest stated in the application.

Mid-March*
Deadline for students to accept IMPRS Summer Program offers.
Note: Deadline may be extended for students who contact the IMPRS Office requesting a deadline extension because of pending acceptance.

April*
During the month of April, students will be able to work on some online certifications and/or assignments. It is recommended, students should meet with their matched mentor about the project and plan.

May 27*
IMPRS orientation to kick start the summer research and scholarly internships.

May – July
Required IMPRS Professional Development Seminars*
All IMPRS students completing an IU School of Medicine opportunity are required to participate every Thursday from noon-1pm. Seminars take place via Zoom.

IMPRS Poster Presentation. Location: Indianapolis Campus (MedSci Atrium) NOTE: All IMPRS students are REQUIRED to participate.

*Only required for students completing opportunities on an IU School of Medicine campus. Students completing experiences externally should comply with all required deadlines for their selected program.
