3.1 Resident Participation in Medical Student Education

Scope

All IUSM students, residents, and faculty.

Policy Statement

The CCSC recognizes the incredible value of working with residents in the clinical environment. All IUSM medical students will work with residents in the clinical environment for at least 4 weeks during the required clinical rotations prior to August 1 of their phase 3 year. However, the CCSC strongly encourages students to take advantage of additional opportunities to work with residents during other rotations including sub-internships or electives.

Reason for Policy

This policy is to ensure that all medical students at IUSM work with residents during their required clinical rotations for a minimum of four weeks as dictated by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee.

Approval

Approved by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee 1/11/2017.

Procedures

The four weeks of required clerkship will be with residents; the four additional weeks may be with either residents or fellows.

Tracking will occur as part of the curriculum management program.

Sanctions

Failure to meet these requirements will put a student in conflict with the academic requirement for graduation.
