Basic Life Support Requirements

As of May 31, 2017, all IU School of Medicine students are required to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification so they will be prepared to offer potential life-saving resuscitation for patients during their training or within the communities in which they live. Indiana University Health also requires BLS training for all of their faculty, staff and trainees

All students new to IUSM will be required to receive training from an AHA-approved program prior to beginning the fall semester.

The Center for Physician Education has a detailed webpage, which includes photos of appropriate certifications.

  • BLS certification must be completed at an AHA Approved Training facility. (Find a facility or course)
  • Training can be completed at any AHA approved training facility at the expense of the attendee. Residents, Fellows and Medical Students from the IUSM currently training at, or incoming, to IU Health facilities can complete their BLS and applicable ACLS or PALS through IU Health ERTI department (Wile Hall Methodist) at no cost for the course (textbooks not included and may be purchased or may be borrowed through ERTI program. Availability is limited.).

You will receive information for uploading your BLS card to MedHub in July.

Please send all questions regarding BLS by email.
